I know I haven’t updated much, but I’ve had a lot to do (and still do). I’ve also set lots of records: 3×3x3: 15.49, 3×3x3 Average: 20.74, Computer 3×3x3 Average: 21.83 (almost 20.75), 3×3x3 OH: 30.30, 3×3x3 OH average: 46.23, 3×3x3 BLD: 1:40.95, 3×3x3 BLD average: 4:11, 42 cube marathon: <21 minutes, 2×2x2 BLD 27 seconds, and speed BLD: 19.69 seconds.

Caltech Winter 2007

Caltech Winter was great :-) I got a few sub-20’s :-), but DNF’ed all BLD’s ;-( 4×4x4 and Magic were cancelled :-(

My dad caught Dan Dzoan’s world record one-handed solve on video:
Low Quality (pretty good)
Medium Quality
The high quality video is at a corresponding URL; it’s 70 MB, so only download if you really want it.
My 18.18
My one-handed 39.69

Alg of the Week

This year, I am introducing the Alg of the Week. The first alg is cube-in-cube-in-cube.

Updates: Sub-2 BLD, etc.

I got a sub-2 BLD yesterday! 1:58.59

My blindfolded pages are growing. I added corner and edge permutation algs, and did a Mathematica simulation of the probabilities.

I tried a few team blindfolded solves with Arthur. The music line-up at the end is accidental!

Bad Cubing Journalism

There is a link on speedcubing.com. Observe the worst journalism ever:

“He can solve a cube blindfolded in 20 minutes.
That means memorizing every square on all six sides, the equivalent of six nine-digit numbers, and manipulating them in his mind while going through a series of algorithms like this one: F R U R’ U’ F’.”

What?
That wouldn’t even be useful if it made sense or if anybody’s tried it (I’d rather try my regular method blindfolded). At least the alg is useful, during regular solves.
By the way, I got a 2:00.06 blindfolded solve; I didn’t quite finish twisting my single last setup move, though (could this count as a +2 in competition?)…

Not long, apparently. I set a new record average of 22.46 during the Sunday Contest.

Heise Sim BLD: 2:49.83

December 22: Today I did a few blindfolded solves, on Ryan Heise’s simulator. Let’s see how long that 2:49.83 stays at spot #1…
Now, I’d better get back to RefCon…

December 23: Craig Bouchard beat my 2:49.83 with a 2:49.73. So, I got myself a 2:35.79. Let’s see how long that one lasts…

Blindfolded 3-Look Corner Orientation / Scramble Probabilities

I’ve been busy again. I set new Magic (1.29, 1.26, and 1.26 again), 2×2x2 BLD, and 3×3x3 BLD (2:25) records, all on video. They’ll all be online eventually…

I wrote up a few pages explaining my corner orientation system for blindfolded solves. I also calculated the probabilities of cubies being in their place or oriented, in a random scramble; the results are on this page.
